Mahmoud started as an Olympic gymnast and an accountant. But in 1959, he and his brother, Ali, formed the Reda Company. Mahmoud was the choreographer, teacher and artistic director and Ali’s interest lay in business promotion and film direction. In 1964 the Reda Troupe became a national troupe subsidized by the Egyptian government. Initially, the Reda Troupe concentrated on dance styles within Cairo but eventually expanded to cover most of Egypt. The dance presented tried to preserve the essence but it was staged and costumed for an audience. There are strong ballet influences in their choreographies. |
