Book Review: Looking for Little Egypt
Donna Carlton
Published in the MEDANZ newsletter, October 1999
Donna Carlton sets herself the task of finding out whether "Little Egypt" was an actual person at the World's Colombian Exposition (Chicago Fair) in 1893. She examined contemporary newspaper and souvenir volumes. She found many types of Middle Eastern dance including Tunisian, Egyptian, Turkish and French Oriental Fantasy (entertainment for "gentlemen").
The book is 103 pages and along with her text covering the history of the Fair, various personalities, and the rise of the Hoochy Coochy includes lots of photographs, cartoons, diagrams as well as notes and an index.
And was there a Little Egypt at the Fair? Why not read the book and find out.
